RE: Chinese Tire Story

Just a brief pipein. I had OEM chinese tires on my 5er and took extreme care with them; pressure, highway speed, trailer weight, but still had a blowout at 5000 miles. The other three had splits in the sidewalls. While choosing a Mexican manuf. tire, my dealer said the basic problem rarley addressed by RV owners is Premium vs OEM (cheap, poorly made) tires. While choosing replacements- chinese or otherwise, many repurchase the cheaper OEM type tires and end up with the same problems. Stick with the Premium quality replacements and you have a better chance of the tires not failing.

RE: Check this CG out

We stayed at that CG in the summer of 07. His web site doesnt surprise me. The owner is quite a character- does things a bit different than others. I think I'd go back if we were traveling up that area again. But take cash or a check book. He doesnt like that plastic stuff.

RE: Denman Tire Corp.?

I bought Denman Express S/T tires (225/75R/15 D rated) for my 5er after all my Duros were cracking and condemned with 5000 miles on them. They are made in Mexico and were 3 weeks old when I bought them (very fresh). The dealer who wanted to sell me Goodyears admitted the Denmans were beautifully made tires. He said Denman was very well known in the construction equipment industry. I had them spun balanced with steel valves. Cost a little more but I'm very pleased with them.

RE: I-10 Through Houston

Through Huston on I-10? Eeeegads, no, no, no! I did that pulling a fiver- the only RV on the highway at 10 am week day. I shared that on this forum after arriving in Brownsville. All the Texans said, "You did what?" Never again. White knuckle all the way thru the city. Buckeroos and semis cutting in front of you- narrow lanes, construction, rolling, bucking, bumpy blacktop. Go around. 'nough said.

RE: Portable washing machine..have you used this?

We take it on the road and store it in the shower. Works great for socks and underwear and small light things. Rinses OK, ring by hand. Use CG dryers when available. Good for stuff you really need like socks, underwear as I said.

RE: Another low point drain question

You describe the same setup as I have. I would guess like in my system that the red pipe sticking out with the valve on it is the fresh water tank drain and the pipe next to it is the overflow pipe from the fresh water tank.

RE: No Picture with Cable

Not sure this is the problem but when I use the roof antenna, I turn on the amplifier, but when I use cable input from the CG, the amplifier must be off. Hope this helps.

RE: Winterize with NOT Quite Empty Waste Tanks

Last year was my first winterizing and I had completely emptied the gray water tank and at my last campground had emptied the black water and dumped abt three gallons of water with liquid calgon and liquid detergent. (GEO Method)Left it like that and had no problems. The calgon and detergent probably kept everything from freezing although if it had froze I dont think it would have hurt anything. But above all I would think it best to empty the black tank of all solids.

RE: Problem with Furnace and front AC

Not only are the furnace and a/c controlled by the thermostat but like my unit may be controlled by the same circuit board located in the ceiling unit of the a/c. There' a fuse in the circuit board may be blown or the board itself may have to be replaced. Remove the a/c cover bezel in the ceiling and it should reveal a box inside of which is the circuit board. The flat auto type fuse should be visible on the board. Check and replace if that's the problem. My board got fried during a lightning hit.

RE: What length is acceptable for motorhome and trailer?

We were at a CG in Penna. and a DP pulled in next to us towing a very high closed trailer. After talking to us a bit the owner said his whole rig was 75 ft long. He travels all over the east and midwest attending cycle shows and never mentioned being stopped for his length.

RE: Electrical Problem/possible lightning strike

Lightning fried a circuit board in my AC which also controlled the furnace. Drop the ceiling vent of your AC to expose the circuit board. Usually there is a plug-in flat auto fuse on the board. Check it and replace if nec. If AC still doesnt run and if the furnace doesnt run either, you might need a new ciruit board. Got mine from the dealer who had a spare- cost me $125. Converter and everything else electrical in my 5er worked OK.

blowing out psi?

For those who blow out their water lines with an air compressor at winterizing time, what psi max do you use. Heard that too much air pressure can do damage to the lines. Thanks

RE: Covering camper for winter rain

The breathable types are the way to go however be aware where they touch the rv, water will seep thru. I had one for my popup a few years back and used it once. I put towels over the plastic vent covers to keep them from being scratched by the cover and the towels soaked up water and froze during the winter. Also, learned real quick that when the wind blows, the cover will rub against the rv corners and wear/scratch the surface like sandpaper. Not nice. Now I dont cover my 5er at all. No problems.

RE: Tire Info

I have 4 Denman ST 225/75R/15 d range. Max speed rated at 65mph although I keep the 5er at 60 and below for mpg reasons. You're buying a great tire! IMHO.

RE: Ford F-250 V10

I have the 2006 F250 V10, 4.10 Super Duty, 4x2 (wish I got the 4x4). My second tank fillup I got 16 mpg. Usually abt 13-14. With the 5er, 8- 10 mpg. When I dont go over 60 mph I notice a 25% increase in mpg. I have tow mode, ford brake controller and use cruise control, absolutley great combinations.

RE: Direct TV and Concertone Setup

Im guessing that what you are getting on channel 3 is a composite signal from the Direct TV box, a single cable with 'F' connector?- your getting pix and sound poorly- indicates too much loss from Direct TV to concertone- loose/poor F connector. But when you tune the Concertone to Input 2, you dont get sound- sounds like a wiring problem, check your red white and yellow connectors from Direct TV to Concertone cables, then Concertone cables to back of Concertone. Confirm connectors to the concertone are OK by wiring a DVD player or tape player to the input 2 connectors on the wall outlet instead of the Direct TV. Sorry if explaination might be confusing- good luck.

RE: Duro Tires

Duros came with 5er- had 5000 miles on my first blowout. Took pix along side the highway of the tread separation/failure while waiting for road assistance and sent them to Duro web site after calling them to get instructions as to what to do. Filled a form online and attached the pictures. Received a Duro replacement in 5 days via FedEx. On the sixth day I purchased 4 new Denmans, using the new Duro for a spare. All remaning Duros had splits in the sidewalls. The tire dealer said all tires would have failed.

RE: Extra Spare Tire...

I carry two spares, after driving around Toledo at 5PM on a friday, hauling a 5er looking for an open tire store to purchase a spare to continue trip home. (phew)

RE: Broken wheel studs

In general, newly mounted wheels need to have the lug nuts re-torqued at 50 miles and 100 miles after beinng freshly installed as they tend to loosen up as you travel. That MIGHT explain the "finger tight" nuts you found since you explained you did not use a torque wrench on them as you traveled. Having said that, it doesn't explain the "sheared" lug nuts you found- generally indicating OVER TIGHTENED lug nuts. Sounds like inconsistent tightening by the mechanics. You dodged a bullet- glad all were safe.
